How To Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering your time to help the Marcus Foster Education Fund. Your efforts can help directly benefit the lives of Oakland schoolchildren, their parents, and their teachers.  Volunteers enrich the work that we do in the community, and we are in need of volunteers at various points throughout the year.  If you are interested in volunteering with us, please contact us to join our volunteer list.  Below are some of the programs you might help us with.

Marcus Foster Scholarship Program

Our scholarship program awards approximately 70 scholarships to Oakland Public High School Students who have a proven track record of academic excellence and are pursuing a post-secondary education.  The Fund is seeking community members who are interested in participating in our scholarship selection process, and for interns to help with office work.  We are also looking to recruit 15 mentors to be matched with the recipients of the Marcus Foster Scholarship in the spring of 2009.  We welcome all those who are interested to contact us.

Take-Home-A-Computer Program

MFEF's Oakland Technology Exchange West Project, (OTX-West) distributes high-quality, refurbished home computers to Oakland Public School students and their families. Oakland Technology Exchange West volunteers clean, test and distribute donated equipment for future use in students' homes and schools. Students may earn community service credits and earn computer accessories including: color printers, speakers, monitors and multi-function machines by volunteering at OTX-West. Non-technical volunteers may also assist in promoting the home computer program at selected school sites.

OTX-West technical volunteers provide weekly, technical support to students who have participated in our home computer program. Technical volunteers are provided by Urban Voice, a local technical job training program and partner of the Fund. OTX-West provides volunteers a unique opportunity to learn the environmental value of computer reuse and gain practical experience in the ever-changing world of computer technology. Bi-lingual adult volunteers are needed.

Family University

MFEF's Family University provides parents educational opportunities to support their childrens' academic success and well-being through workshops at school sites throughout Oakland. Volunteers are needed to provide child care, assist in parent registration and provide additional staff support during training sessions. For more information call the Fund, (510) 835-0291. Bi-lingual individuals and students seeking community service credits, teaching credentials and internships are encouraged to participate in this rewarding program.
