MFEI has been awarded 1.1 million dollars over two years by the College access Foundation of California to continue its facilitation of the efforts of the College Bound Brotherhood to increase college readiness, access and completion for African American young men.
The College Bound Brotherhood is a network of organizations undertaking focused school improvement efforts in five bay area school districts: Oakland, Hayward, San Francisco Antioch and West Contra Costa. Between January and August of this year, the districts along with13 non-profit partners experienced in providing college readiness and completion services to African American young men engaged in a cycle of inquiry to determine the institutional root causes of student achievement gaps within and across the five districts. The Brotherhood partners used the findings and their extensive wealth of knowledge in serving African American youth to develop a plan of action to be implemented in each of the 5 school districts over the next two years. MFEI will facilitate the data collection process and disseminate the findings to the larger public in order to generate region-wide movement around this complex and intransigent issue.
In July, the College Bound Brotherhood held its second annual Get Ready for College event. Over 50 college-bound young men and their parents attended the event, which provided recent high school graduates an opportunity to meet with current college students and college administrators to gain tools that would help prepare them for a smooth transition into college. This day of bonding and learning was also attended by students who were recipients of scholarships the Brotherhood provides to first-year college students. The event also provided parents with resources to help them prepare for the new chapter in their sons’ lives.
We are also pleased to announce the Bound for Greatness Scholarship , our first scholarship opportunity for second year college students. The Brotherhood is thrilled to be able to offer continued financial support to our young men who are, with yours and our continued community support, bound for greatness.
