The Marcus Foster Education Institute (MFEI), a nonprofit that works for equity and enhanced education opportunities for Oakland students and families, is celebrating two important milestones: 50 years of service to the community and the 100th birthday of trailblazing educator Dr. Marcus A. Foster, Oakland’s first Black superintendent.
Marcus Foster, the revered superintendent of Oakland Unified in the early 1970s, has been a role model for generations of educators inspired by his courage, vision and passion for helping even the most marginalized students succeed.
But there was one thing he was especially good at.
The honorees of the Marcus Foster Education Institute (MFEI) 100 of the 100th were celebrated on March 31, 2023 for the trailblazing work they have done and continue to do in the space of education equity, advocacy and youth development. These individuals work across various industries serving communities and they are committed to the well-being and progress of students and families from historically marginalized communities. They are leaders whose volunteer and professional undertakings embody Dr. Foster’s powerful practices.
The trailblazing educator who was assassinated by the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1973 would have turned 100 on Friday. The organization he founded is celebrating his legacy by honoring those who’ve walked in his footsteps…
