UMOJA HEALTH WORKFORCE INTERNSHIP (UHWI)

Partnering with Umoja Health and Roots Community Health Clinic, MFEI serves as the backbone organization of the Umoja Health Workforce Internship. MFEI provides content for a 6-week intensive internship for college students interested in a career in medicine with an emphasis in public health. All interns are BIPOC young people from Oakland.

The aims of UHWI are to provide academic and clinical exposure to ensure career success and inspire a generation of medical leadership that will effectively reintegrate medicine and public health to provide high quality care to BIPOC communities.

Throughout these 6 weeks, the interns attend seminars on public health and college and career success and are empowered to think critically about where current systems are and how they want these systems to improve. Learning how to effectively work in teams is one element of the internship, and the interns practice this through activities like designing ideal communities, researching vaccine hesitancy, and exploring ways to combat obesity.
